3. Executive Summary

In 2005 The Kier gallery undertook a 3 year market study titled:Were Building A Community

Overall Purpose of the Market Study
The purpose of the Market Study was threefold.

First, it would assess the perceived values, needs and preferences of for arts,cultural, and heritage activities, conducted through a Kier Gallery community based cultural model .

Second, it would engage individuals and organizations involved in the arts, culture and heritage communities in an examination of their current and future needs for both support and facilities.

And thirdly, it would begin to explore the current capacity for the Kier Gallery to facilitate and
promote access to these arts, culture and heritage activities throughout Prince Edward Island communities with the Kier gallery acting as a base of training.


The specific research objectives for the study period were:

  • To create an inventory of organizations and individuals artist, culture and heritage groups in Prince Edward Island that currently use the Kier Gallery services .

  • To create and present historical moments in history for cultural events and locations that share our unique history on Prince Edward Island.


Findings of the Market Study "Were Building A Community"

The Market Study found that:

  • Residents of the Prince Edward Island are active participants in arts events and activities;
  • Cultural activities are regarded as very important by Charlottetown residents as contributors to a balanced and quality community life
  • Cultural spaces are valued by residents as much as arenas community halls and parks.
  • Live performance and exhibit facilities were identified as those the most needing development.
  • A feasibility study should be undertaken.
